Walden.2

Actual Elapsed Time: 14 hours (50,400 seconds)

A beach at Walden Pond teems with activity over the course of a day. It is easy to see the people as they claim their corner of the sand and then leave. In this clip, it is just as easy to see the changes in the landscape. Early in the morning the mist rises from the lake, making everything hazy and white. The lake is as still as a mirror, not yet ruffled by the wind. The mist gives way to thick morning cloud cover, which gradually fades as the sun warms the air enough to evaporate the water vapor. Occasional cumulus clouds scurry by, high in the sky. As the air cools with evening, thick clouds again close out the sun. The clouds change the quality of light and the edges of shadows. Even the ripples in the lake (now that the wind has come up) have sharp edges in the clear light of early afternoon.

How This Clip Was Made:

This time-lapse video was created by shooting 14 hours of regular video. Only 1 of roughly every 5,000 frames of video was digitized and transferred to a computer. When the transferred frames are displayed, the action is shown at about 5,000 times normal speed. Production: Bob Hone. Post-Production: Brennan Doyle.
