If you are doing a long-term project you don't have to worry about the camera's timer. Make sure the image resolution to 600x800. Remove the lens cap. Slide the power switch to On. Set the Rec/Play lever to Rec and press the shutter button. You did it! You just took the first image for your time-lapse project.
